Of humming-birds and 6 foot bunnies
Nov. 18th, 2004 06:13 pmNew work is going fine apart from one (very minor) item. We have a new trainer-person who is very lovely - but by her own admission somewhat over-energetic. Like a hummingbird on speed is one description that comes to mind - and this is forming an interesting contrast to a small Shona who is feeling decidedly clouded over this week. (I am very much hoping I just feel down because of the stresses of having to cope with new people because I *really* don't want to be depressed again).
And I saw Donnie Darko for the first time on Tuesday. On the big screen too, since UGC were running the director's cut as their Tuesday movie (it's been a bit patchy of late but they often show less than current films on a Tuesday. Best yet was The Wickerman.) There seemed to be quite a few assorted goths there for some reason and The Emperor Penguin and I ended up in the bar with deadsunflower and ladykomachi. Hello to both! I thought Donnie Darko was really rather good but I think I might watch it again to see if I understand things a bit better second time round.
Any thoughts on what obvious stuff I was missing are more than welcome...
Also I just finished one of the best SF anthologies I've come across for ages - "Alien Sex", edited by Ellen Datlow. First place is probably tied between "And I Awoke and Found Me Here on the Cold Hill's Side" by James Tiptree, Jr. and "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" by Larry Niven. The former is thoroughly grim and depressing and mainly about the emptiness of life - the latter is speculation on Superman's sex life and absolutely hilarious (although some of the mental images are just a little disturbing). Good book!
(Book reviews are likely to be an occasional feature in this LJ as I spend an awful lot of time absent from this reality and wandering through other peoples')
