...and then the tent-pole shattered.
Jun. 7th, 2006 10:31 amOne of the tent-poles (of a brand new tent, I might add) decided to shatter on Saturday night. In the middle of nowhere, out of walking distance to any other shelter and at sunset. Not a major problem for that particular night - it was very warm and I only really needed the midgie net part of the tent, rather that actual weatherproofing. So I pitched as best I could and spent a very pleasant night looking out over Loch Lomond.
However, the tent was now kaput. In future, gaffer tape shall be added to my list of camping essentials but even gaffer tape would have had a job with a section of fibreglass pole that had basically disintegrated - there wasn't that much to be taping together. The tent obviously wasn't going to stand any actual weather and paying for accomodation would somewhat defeat the purpose of a cheap holiday. So on Sunday morning I walked to Inversnaid, called T.E.P. from the hotel phone and arranged uplift by car since the nearest train station was (at my pace) a couple of days away in either direction.
Replacement of tent has been duly refused, since I would not now trust the budget option as far as I could throw it, and refund secured. Some kind of plan B will now come into operation, details to follow.
